Terms
Terms of service.
Effective 30 September 2026. These terms are a contract between you and Scanlatch for the barcode SDK, this website and the license service behind them. They say what you are paying for, what we promise, and what happens when things go wrong.
01 / Scope
What these terms cover
They cover your use of the @scanlatch/sdk package under an account key, this website, your account, and the license service that decides whether an installation may scan. If you do not agree with them, do not use the service.
They are not an agreement with your end users. When you embed the SDK in your own app, the people scanning barcodes on your site are your users, not ours, and they never become our customers by scanning.
02 / Service
What Scanlatch is
Scanlatch is a barcode-scanning SDK that runs inside the browser. All decoding happens on the device: images and camera frames are processed there, and what is scanned never reaches us.
Running the SDK requires a license key issued to your account. You register the exact websites that key may run on, and the SDK checks in with our license service — once when it starts, and about once a day while in use. How often it checks never depends on how much you scan.
03 / Account
Your account and your key
You sign in with an email address and a one-time code; there are no passwords. You are responsible for the accuracy of your email address and for everything done under your account.
Your account key is a credential. Keep it as private as a password, embed it only in apps that need it, and contact support from inside your account if it leaks. You can register as many websites as you like, but only origins you control or are authorized to represent.
04 / Trial
The two-week trial
A trial needs no card and lasts fourteen days across the whole account. The clock starts the first time any installation activates your key, and it cannot be reset — not by new devices, new websites, or clearing browser storage. Trial installations must be online for every check.
05 / Billing
What you pay for
A subscription costs $5 per installation per month, before tax. An installation is one browser installation of your app on one of your registered websites: the same browser tomorrow is still one, while a second browser, profile or website is another. Scans are unlimited and never move the price.
Only activity the service observes is billed. Every website you register counts as live and is billed, including staging, preview and test sites. Only localhost and 127.0.0.1 on your own machine are never billed. Registered websites are billed on what the service actually sees, and installations above your account’s automatic-billing ceiling are held for reconciliation instead of charged — scanning continues while we sort it out with you.
Payment runs through Stripe’s hosted checkout and billing portal. Sales tax is added only where we are registered to collect it, and any tax is shown before you pay. Your billing cycle runs from the day you subscribed, not the calendar month. Cancel at any time and keep scanning until the end of the cycle you paid for; amounts already paid are not refunded. If a payment fails, you have seven days from the first failure to fix it. After that, online checks stop granting new scanning authority, while already-activated paid installations keep their offline behavior.
06 / Offline
When the network drops
A paid installation activates online once. After that, when a later check cannot connect, times out, or meets a temporary outage, scanning continues. Protocol errors and signed denials still stop scanning.
That is deliberate: this is a license for honest customers, not a lock. Someone who edits your app can work around the checks, and these terms do not permit it — but we did not build the product to win that fight.
07 / Your app
Your app and your end users
You embed the SDK, so the relationship with the people scanning is yours. You are responsible for getting their consent where the law requires it — including permission to use the camera — and for the privacy disclosures you make to them.
The SDK asks for camera access only inside your app and only with the end user’s permission. What those users scan stays in their browser; the Privacy policy says exactly what does and does not reach us.
08 / Use
Acceptable use
- Do not attack or probe the service — no scraping, vulnerability scanning, load testing or attempts to bypass rate limits, except with our written permission.
- Do not serve your app to real users from localhost to avoid paying for it, and do not rotate installation identity to escape counting.
- Do not remove licensing or attribution notices from the SDK, or modify it to disable license checks.
- Do not use the service for anything unlawful.
09 / Changes
Changes and availability
We may add, change or remove features, and we improve the SDK continuously. We do not promise the service will be uninterrupted or error-free; maintenance happens, and the offline behavior above exists for exactly that. If we ever stop offering the service entirely, we will notify account holders by email in advance.
10 / No warranties
Disclaimers
The service is provided as is and as available, without warranties of any kind, to the extent the law allows. Barcode decoding depends on cameras, images and conditions; we do not promise that every barcode will be decoded, or decoded at any particular speed, on every device.
11 / Liability
Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, Scanlatch is not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, and our total liability for anything connected with the service is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the event. Nothing here excludes liability for fraud, or anything else the law does not let us exclude.
12 / Termination
Ending the relationship
You can stop at any time: cancel the subscription in your billing portal and take the SDK out of your app. We may suspend or end the service for an account that breaks these terms, uses the service unlawfully, or abandons payment beyond the grace period above. Sections that by their nature survive — including what you owe, the disclaimers and this limitation — do. What happens to your data is described in the Privacy policy.
13 / Updates
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the service changes; the effective date at the top is always the current version. For material changes we will notify account holders by email or in the portal before the new terms take effect. If you keep using the service after that date, the updated terms apply.
14 / Law
Governing law and contact
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Wyoming, USA, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules, and any dispute under them will be brought only in a court located in Wyoming. If any part of these terms is unenforceable, the rest remains in force.
Questions, notices and legal correspondence reach Scanlatch through the support contact inside your account.
